Women are no longer recommended to undergo hip resurfacing due to its high failure rates. Data showed that women who had undergone hip resurfacing are up to five times more likely to experience complications than men after the surgery, according to a recent study.
The exact cause of hip implant resurfacing failing higher in women is not known, but it is thought to be due in part to the strength of the bone supporting the hip resurfacing implant. However, a study claims that the size of the patient’s femoral cap is the deal-breaker, and since women have smaller joints than men, the rate of failure is higher. The general consensus was that any procedure that involved a metal-on-metal implant, be it a full joint or a resurfacing, failed more often than those performed without all-metal components.
